Kontozisis A-Grafo Assyrtiko White 2022
£28.00
Description
The winery, based at the foothills of mount Agrafa, has been practicing certified organic viticulture and vinification since 1991, one of the first to get such certification in Greece. Citrusy with stone fruit hints and clear mineral undertones. On the palate notes of lemon, bergamot peels and yellow apples. The wine is full bodied with high acidity and long, lingering finish. Recommended with grilled fish, roast pork and dishes cooked in egg-lemon sauce.

Assyrtiko
Assyrtiko is by far Greece’s most renowned white grape variety, associated most famously with the volcanic island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea. Following its notable success, it is now grown successfully all over Greece and beyond in Clare Valley, Australia, South Africa and California, being the first Greek grape to become international. It has developed a reputation as being a versatile grape variety, producing wines in a multitude of styles, from fresh, mineral white wines to oaked, worth keeping ones and from bold complex reds to rıch matured dessert wines, such as Vinsanto. Compact clusters of large, moderately thick-skinned berries, late budding and late ripening. Vigorous and productive, resistant to drought, disease and wind and capable of maintaining high acidity up to the final stages of the ripening period. In Santorini it is trained in the characteristic baskets, sitting close to the ground and named “kouloures” by the locals.
Producer
Kontozisis Organic Vineyards is a small estate near Kanalia, in the foothills of Mount Agrafa in Thessaly, central Greece. Andreas Kontozisis, together with his father and brother, founded it in 1991 — originally just to supply their own restaurant — by replanting and reviving more than a hundred small, often abandoned plots, and the estate has been certified organic ever since, among the very first in Greece to do so. Andreas now runs the 11–12 hectares with his partner Aphrodite Tousia, farming entirely by hand at low yields, with no commercial yeasts and no press — only free-run juice. Their main focus is Limniona, a once-forgotten indigenous red grape of Thessaly, alongside Malagousia, Roditis and Assyrtiko.
