An unusual sparkling expression of Ikaria's indigenous red grape, Fokiano, made in an extra brut style with barely a hint of sweetness. Fokiano typically shows a bright ruby colour with a distinctive aroma and long finish; here that character comes through with fine, persistent bubbles and a bone-dry, food-friendly finish.

This grape variety is mostly cultivated in the Aegean Islands of Samos, Ikaria and other Dodecanese Islands. Fokiano has a solid nature, it is resistant to dry weather conditions and infections. It is used in red, rose and sweet wine production. It can produce well-balanced wines in wide spectrum of red colour, fruity scents and tastes.
Producer
Afianes Wines was founded on Ikaria in 1997 by Nikos and Maria Afianes, and is now run alongside their children, Konstantinos and Eftychia. For more than two decades the estate has focused on reviving Ikaria's two indigenous varieties, Fokiano and Begleri, once little known beyond the island. Grapes are still foot-trodden in a traditional granite press and fermented in buried clay jars, a method that shapes the wines' earthy, layered character; some cuvées see time in French oak. Everything is fermented with indigenous wild yeast and bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal sulphites — a natural, biodynamic and organic approach that runs through the whole range.
