Description

The color is bright, deep morello cherry-red. The nose reveals aromas of blackberries, raspberries and ripe strawberries with just a touch of tobacco and spices such as clove and cinnamon. It is a medium-bodied wine with elegant structure, balanced acidity and very ripe, elegant tannins. The finish is moderately-long, dominated by red fruits and followed by sweet vanilla and black pepper.

Agiorgitiko

Agiorgitiko is the quiet power grape of the Greek vineyard and of yet unexplored potential. It is not only the PDO grape of Nemea, the largest region with such status but has the fame that spreads throughout Greece and so does its cultivation. It is also the most marketed grape domestically, to the extent that one can find agents selling wines of Nemea anywhere in Greece, even in the heart of other dedicated wine-producing regions. It performs well in hot climates and gives a variety of styles. Thick-skinned of variable size, depending on the clone and with around 8 clones available commercially today. It is potentially high yielding, late budding and late ripening.

Producer

George Skouras, born in Argos, one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities, studied agriculture and oenology at the University of Dijon in Burgundy before founding his own winery in 1986, starting out of a small facility in Pyrgela on Argos's outskirts. His first wine, the now-iconic Megas Oenos — a blend of Agiorgitiko and Cabernet Sauvignon — helped demonstrate that Greek grapes could hold their own on the international stage. The estate later built a boutique winery in Gymno, inside the Nemea appellation, before moving in 2004 to its current, larger facility in Malandreni, and in 2024 opened further winemaking facilities in Mantinia. Skouras remains rooted in Agiorgitiko and Nemea, while also working with Moschofilero, Roditis and the nearly extinct Mavrostifo of Argos, alongside international varieties; George's son Dimitris now runs day-to-day operations.
