Agiorgitiko
Agiorgitiko is the quiet power grape of the Greek vineyard and of yet unexplored potential. It is not only the PDO grape of Nemea, the largest region with such status but has the fame that spreads throughout Greece and so does its cultivation. It is also the most marketed grape domestically, to the extent that one can find agents selling wines of Nemea anywhere in Greece, even in the heart of other dedicated wine-producing regions. It performs well in hot climates and gives a variety of styles. Thick-skinned of variable size, depending on the clone and with around 8 clones available commercially today. It is potentially high yielding, late budding and late ripening.
Producer
Palivos (Palivou Estate) is a third-generation family winery in Ancient Nemea, established in its current form by George and Aggeliki Palivos in 1995, 800m from the region's famous archaeological site. The family farms around 30–50 hectares organically, planted mainly with Agiorgitiko — the grape Nemea is built on — alongside Roditis, Malagousia and a handful of international varieties. George Palivos has long argued that 'the wine is made in the vineyard, not the winery,' and has become one of Nemea's most prominent ambassadors, taking the region's wines to international markets while pushing Agiorgitiko into dry, aged, sparkling and sweet styles alike. Today his daughters, Evangelia — an oenologist — and Vassiliki, who runs marketing and operations, are carrying the estate into its next generation.
