Description
A blend of three grape varieties: two famous Greek varieties, Mavrotragano of the Aegean islands (30%), and Xinomavro of Northern Greece (30%), and a global variety, Syrah (40%). It is an intensely fruity wine with a very balanced taste. Nose of high aromatic intensity, with aromas of sour cherry, cherry jam, berry, plum and butter, while smoked paprika and fresh soil are also noticeable.

Mavrotragano & Xinomavro & Syrah
Mavrotragano is a dark-skinned variety grown exclusively on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini. Traditionally cultivated for the production of sweet red wines, it now has a somewhat cult status as a high-quality dry red. Mavrotragano was almost uprooted to the point of extinction during Santorini’s tourist boom when vineyard land was acquired by developers wanting to build hotels and apartments. At one stage, Mavrotragano accounted for just 2 per cent of Santorini’s dwindling vineyard area – the prestigious Assyrtico was the much-preferred variety on the island.
Producer
Moschopolis Winery sits at 1,000–1,600 feet in Monopigado, Thessaloniki, overlooking Mount Olympus and the Gulf of Thessaloniki. It was founded by Dr. Georgios Germanis, a soil scientist and viticulture consultant with more than 30 years' experience, and is now carried forward by the next generation — Theodoros, Alice and Dimitris. The 22-acre vineyard, farmed sustainably and largely by hand with deliberately low yields, grows Mavrotragano, Xinomavro, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Assyrtiko and Malagousia, much of which goes into the estate's Aiora range, often fermented and matured in clay amphorae.
