Muscat of Alexandria
Muscat of Alexandria is one of the oldest cultivated grape varieties in the world, originating in North Africa and named for its long association with ancient Egypt. Distinct from the smaller-berried Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, it is grown heavily on the Greek island of Lemnos, where it produces intensely aromatic, grapey-flavoured wines in styles ranging from dry to sweet.

EAS Lemnos ('Enosi', the Union) is the Agricultural and Vinicultural Cooperative of Lemnos, founded in 1937 and still owned by the island's own farmers, who between them tend around 3,500 acres of low-yield vineyard. Its wines are built on two local varieties: the indigenous red Limnio, named after the island and grown there since antiquity, and Muscat of Alexandria, which thrives in Lemnos's volcanic soil and arid climate and is the sole grape permitted in the historic PDO Muscat of Lemnos, one of Greece's oldest sweet-wine appellations, with a winemaking tradition said to date back to the Trojan War.
