Aged in American oak barrels for 8 months, this bright red coloured wine with purple shades offers a compound bouquet consisting of aromas from red fruits (sour cherry, strawberry marmalade), fig and vanilla. It nicely accompanies meat balls in tomato sauce, spaghetti with minced meat sauce, and hare stew with its rich body with soft tannins and a spicy aftertaste.
Grape
Agiorgitiko
Agiorgitiko is the quiet power grape of the Greek vineyard and of yet unexplored potential. It is not only the PDO grape of Nemea, the largest region with such status but has the fame that spreads throughout Greece and so does its cultivation. It is also the most marketed grape domestically, to the extent that one can find agents selling wines of Nemea anywhere in Greece, even in the heart of other dedicated wine-producing regions. It performs well in hot climates and gives a variety of styles. Thick-skinned of variable size, depending on the clone and with around 8 clones available commercially today. It is potentially high yielding, late budding and late ripening.
Producer
Theodorakakos
This organic family vineyard and winery lies at the 17th kilometre of the national road Sparta – Gytheio, direction Monemvasia. It was from this region, according to tradition, where the Byzantine emperor and the Court of Constantinople were supplied with wine. The first vines of the vineyard were planted at the beginning of the 20th century, by grandfather Nicolas. Today, with over 30 hectares of privately-owned vineyard, George Theodorakakos continues to cultivate the local wine varieties, Kydonitsa, the Peloponnesian Mavroudi, Monemvasia, Thrapsa and the widely known national grapes Assyrtiko, Rodites and Agiorgitiko. The winery was built in 1988 at the heart of the vineyard, outfitted with the latest equipment to support the production of high-quality wines, under the supervision of George’s enologist son, Nicolaos. Low yields, up to 8t/ha, contribute towards excellent grape quality and the vineyards converted to organic farming in 1996. All the wines produced in the winery use grapes exclusively from the privately-owned vineyard.
