Robola along with Assyrtiko, are the Greek alternatives to Muscadet and Chablis in France, and Soave and Gavi in Italy. Truth is organically produced from grapes grown at around 500 metres above sea level. This results in superb racy freshness, crisp acidity and a superb finish. Amazing, stone, mineral, clean, dry. Really good background structure that lets the wine expand but it stays tight on the palate. Greek Island whites combine gorgeous minerality with racy freshness and comparatively low acidity. To be compared to top unoaked, Northern European whites.
Producer
The Kefalonia Robola Wine Co‑operative was established in 1982 by growers from the Robola zone on the plateau of Omala in central Kefalonia and today comprises around 300 members. From its own winery, sited beside the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos amid the rolling hills of the Robola vineyards, the Co-operative collects and processes the majority of the island’s Robola grapes — around 80–85 % of total production — and vinifies them under the PDO Robola of Cephalonia designation. Robola is a native white grape cultivated exclusively on the limestone-rich slopes and semi-mountainous terraces between roughly 300m and 800m above sea level, where altitude, drainage, and cool sea breezes give the wines marked acidity, citrus brightness, and minerality. The Co-operative’s estate wines, including its San Gerasimo Robola and organic Robola, reflect this combination of site and variety: dry, fresh, finely balanced whites with a signature tension and precision.
