From 100% Chidiriotiko grapes. Hay-coloured. Bouquet typical of the Chidiriotiko grape in blanc de noirs processing, combining light muscat with flowers and citrus fruit. Delightfully fresh taste of pear. Although dry, Methymnaeos white has sherry-like sweetness and depth. Minerality brings to mind the scent of sulfur, abundant in the volcanic soil of Lesvos. Serve chilled with smoked goods, seafood, as well as white confections.
Grape
Chidiriotiko
The last remaining vines of this old grape of Lesvos, Chidiriotiko, has been discovered by the Lambrou family, now the owner of Methymnaeos Winery, in 1980’s and has been saved from extinction. Now cultivated on volcanic soil near the Petrified Forest of the island, all wines of Methymnaeos, the red, the white and uniquely original orange are exclusively made from this unusual red grape variety.
Producer
Methymnaeos
Award-winning Methymnaeos Winery was founded in the remote village of Chidira, in Western Lesvos in 1985, and is the first professional winery in the modern history of an island with an age-old winemaking tradition, dating from mythical times. Its operation is based on the principles of the exclusive use of the unique grape variety Chidiriotiko, native only to the island of Lesvos, cultivation on volcanic soil near the Petrified Forest of the island and organic viticulture and winemaking. Furthermore, because of the sulfur and sulfur compounds found in the soil, they have been first-hand witnesses of the natural protection against disease the soil provides, both in the vineyard as well as in the bottle, helping them to achieve minimal intervention and practically natural wines.
