DESCRIPTION
Natural Red 2017 of the Anatolikos Vineyards is the wine that definitely stole the show at the Fine Red Wines Show this weekend. If you were there you know. In its first appearance, Nikolaidis’ natural red wine was the one that made big names blush. Mavroudi of Thrace (60%) and Limnio (40%) are organically cultivated in the absolutely dry privately owned vineyard on the sandy hills with the granite soil of the Hirodassos area in Avdira, Xanthi. The bottles are very few, a little more than 1.000, as the winemaking method used has a great waist.

Mavroudi
Mavroudi is a dark-skinned grape variety possibly originating from the West Thracian Valley. The low-yielding, late-ripening vine produces small, almost black fruit with thick skins. The grape’s name is derived from the Greek word “mavro”, meaning black, which is appropriate, as the wines it produces usually are of a dense almost black colour. They also have pronounced tannins big body and high acidity, with an abundance of stewed-fruit flavours on the palate, which create a glycerol mouth-feel. There is a certain botanical note, providing a medicinal finish reminiscent of herbs and barks. May one say that this grape has a lot from the character of Cabernet Sauvignon with a Greek twist.
Limnio
Limnio is an important Greek grape variety that has been used in red wine production for more than 2000 years. It has been mentioned by many Greek poets, including Aristotle and Homer. The grape is believed to have originated in the Aegean Island of Limnos, though, surprisingly, it is barely grown there anymore. In the 21st Century, Limnio is more at home on the Halkidiki Peninsula in Greek Macedonia and Rapsani in Thessalia. Limnio is a hardy grape that ripens late and has strong drought resistance.

This family-owned 7-hectare large organic vineyard was planted in 2005 near Avdera, the Thracian town renowned since ancient times for its prolific vineyard and premium quality wines transported to faraway lands. The vineyard, which is lies at 50-70m altitude, approximately 2 km from the Thracian Sea, receiving cooling breezes throughout the year grows the indigenous grape varieties Mavroudi of Thrace, Pamiti, Muscat Blanc and Limnio. The soil is mostly sandy and non-irrigated and the vines benefit from the microclimate of the bay and the microelement deposits, left in the soil by the rainwater, at it streams naturally to the sea. Their yields are very low at 4-5 t/ha and their total annual production is 60.000 bottles.
